What are the benefits of training at THIRST?
- Reduced Injury Risk – Without being healthy and injury free, you can’t compete. Learning proper movement patterns, and how to train will help keep you on the field, and longer.
- Improved Strength – A stronger athlete is a better athlete. Being stronger will help you run, jump, throw, and do anything else sport specific better compared to the weaker athlete.
- Improved Conditioning – Conditioning is not the same as running kids into the ground. Conditioning is a methodical way to improve sports performance skills based upon the energy demands of the sport. This is the proper way to have a “second wind” and not fatigue in sport.
- Improved Speed and Agility – We’re not going to have your kid run through endless drills. We’re going to do real speed and explosive training that involves sprints, jumps, throws, sleds, and other variables that truly create a faster athlete.
- Improved Muscle Size – We’re not going to turn your kid into a bodybuilder, but we are going to help build muscle in key areas that are specific to their sport. Having more muscle mass around a joint, is a more stable, safer joint long term.
About The Program
Our sports performance training is a unique program tailored towards improving the youth athlete on and off the field/court. We’re the only facility in Terre Haute, Indiana that has 25 yards of turf, certified strength and conditioning coaches, world-class equipment, and experience working with athletics for over a decade. We work with youth athletes and children from ages 10+ to collegiate and professional athletes.
How’s It Work?
Strength coach and trainer Brandon Smitley is the premiere authority when it comes to strength and conditioning and athletic development in Terre Haute, Indiana. Between him and his wife, Adrian, they’ve created a facility that’s going to focus on what can help take the athlete to the next level.
The first step in your child’s sports performance journey is to schedule your assessment and consultation. This assessment/consultation is designed to assess the child’s strengths, weaknesses, and current level of fitness and health to help tailor a training program specifically for them. At this time, we’ll also talk about your specific performance goals and what would be optimal based upon time of year and scheduling.
Once the program is created, your child will be coached through each workout session by a professional to ensure proper technique, execution, and that progress is being made.
Your child’s session is not locked into a specific time slot to train or be coached, but rather so long as they come in during our business hours our coaching staff will help them through their entire program. This allows you as a parent/guardian to be flexible with what works best for your schedules, and not penalizing you for missed sessions.
Each of our sports performance training clients/athletes get a free T-Shirt and sticker.
Why Strength Training For Children/Youth Athletes?
In today’s athletics, kids are doing more and becoming more competitive. As such, the ability to play varsity high school sports, make it on a college team, or even possibly think about professional sports is even harder. Strength and conditioning programs for youth athletics helps teach kids proper movement patterns, strengthen the bones and muscles, and provide kids with an ability to prevent injury.
If you’re curious if strength training is for your child, did you know that when you kid runs and jumps, they apply more ground reaction forces through their body that are more than 3-5x their bodyweight?! That would be equivalent to your 50 pound child lifting 150-250 pounds (not going to happen, right?). So in all reality, your child is already doing something harder on their body than strength training – which is the primary reason that professionals are highly encouraging kids to get into strength training at an early age. When your kid is in the weight-room with a professional (like here at THIRST), we can provide proper coaching and movement that will help aid your child’s health and structure in a controlled atmosphere.
Strength training is also great for building camaraderie, social networks, and teaching hard work and consistency. It takes time to get stronger, faster, and more conditioned, but your kid can also see and feel the difference themselves. There are not many activities where the results are so tangible after 4-6 weeks.
Strength training WILL NOT hinder your child’s growth, make them “bulky”, or cause any adverse issues to their health. If anything, strength training will teach your child the value of health and fitness for their rest of their life and help set the foundation for a great young adult in the future.
