This has kind of been a special weekend of training and learning as some of the Purdue Barbell team members were fortunate enough to join our coach, Brandon Smitley, in putting on a powerlifting seminar down in Terre Haute, Indiana. I will talk about this more below but this allowed us to get a leg session in using Brandon’s monolift, meet a bunch of awesome people, and have a great time as a team like always. The session itself looked like this…
- Stretch and Warm-Up
- Stiff Leg Deadlift
- 3 Warm-Up Sets
- 275×8, 295×8, 305×8, 315×8
- Front Squat
- 185×10, 195×10, 205×10, 215×10
- Reverse Lunges – 4×12
- Reverse Band Safety Squat Bar Box Squat (Using Doubled Over Elitefts Pro Mini Bands)
- 275×8, 295×8, 315×8, 335×8
- Band Leg Curls – 3×20
- Weighted V-Ups – 4×10
This is the first time I have had the opportunity to attend a true powerlifting seminar not only from a learning perspective but also with the chance to help others out and give training suggestions. I am in no way an expert but I love being able to pass on anything that I have fortunate enough to pick up regarding training along the way. I was able to spend a couple days with a lot of good friends and meet many new ones.
Lifting in a monolift is a great treat anytime and training with Brandon always lights a fire under my butt to push that much harder. One thing I have to adjust a little in training during this volume cycle is my mentality on the weights I’m moving. I am used to trying to set PRs on the major lifts each time I hit them but with this type of training that is not necessarily the best. I wanted to go a little heavier on the box squats during the session today but after a long day of helping out in the seminar and some pre-exhaustion in the legs, I decided to go ahead and move on and finish training strong. I the way that Brandon rotates around the placement of the “heavier” movements during the sessions in this program and seeing how it effects my performance. After looking at the video from my last set with the SSB, I am glad I called it here, ended on a solid set, and got all the work in to the fullest extent. Until next time!
